There’s something magical about stepping into Rome for the first time. One moment you're walking down a modern street, and the next you're standing beside ruins that are nearly 2,000 years old. During my visit, I quickly learned that Rome rewards travelers who slow down, wander, and embrace the unexpected.
The biggest mistake many visitors make is sleeping in. Rome's most famous attractions become extremely crowded by mid-morning.
Why it helps:
Cooler temperatures, especially in spring and summer
Better photos with fewer people
Shorter lines at major attractions
My favorite early-morning experience was visiting the Trevi Fountain before the crowds arrived. The atmosphere felt completely different from the busy afternoon scene.
Rome is essentially an open-air museum, and you'll spend far more time walking than you expect.
Many streets are covered with ancient cobblestones, which can be tough on your feet.
Tip: Plan for 15,000–25,000 steps per day if you're exploring the city center.
Some of Rome's most famous sites regularly sell out.
Consider booking ahead for:
Colosseum
Roman Forum
Vatican Museums
St. Peter's Basilica
This can save hours of waiting in line.
Some of my favorite meals happened a few streets away from the major landmarks.
Must-try Roman dishes:
Cacio e Pepe
Carbonara
Supplì
Authentic gelato
A good rule: if the menu has photos of every dish and staff are actively trying to pull tourists inside, keep walking.
Rome's history spans more than two millennia. It's tempting to see everything, but you'll enjoy the city more if you focus on a few places each day.
Some of my favorite moments were simply sitting in a piazza with a coffee and watching everyday Roman life unfold around me.
Many travelers head back to their hotels after dinner, but Rome becomes especially beautiful at night.
Highlights include:
The illuminated Colosseum
Evening walks around the Pantheon
Relaxing in Rome's lively piazzas
The city feels calmer, cooler, and more romantic after dark.
Rome isn't a city that should be rushed. The best memories often come from the unplanned moments—finding a hidden alleyway, discovering a neighborhood café, or stumbling upon an ancient ruin while looking for lunch.
If you're visiting Rome for the first time, my biggest advice is simple: leave room in your itinerary to get lost. Some of the city's greatest treasures aren't marked on any travel map.
Arrivederci, and happy travels! 🇮🇹✈️
